Neutropenia

Introduction

Neutropenia is characterised by a very low presence of neutrophils. These immune system cells kill harmful bacteria and other foreign agents entering your body.
Neutrophils are white blood cells created by the bone marrow. Moving around in the bloodstream, neutrophils transport themselves to places of infection and neutralize offending bacteria.

Neutropenia is connected to skin and mouth infections, particular infections of the mucous membranes.
These infections can appear as mouth ulcers, anal ulcers, and fissures.

Other symptoms are:

  • Unexplained fever
  • They may present with fever and the presence of very low neutrophils is a risk factor for life threatening infections pneumonia and septicemia.

The causes of neutropenia include:

  • Problem with neutrophil formation in the bone marrow
  • Destruction of neutrophils outside the bone marrow
  • Infection
  • Nutritional deficiency

Causes of decreased production of neutrophils include:

  • Having an issue with bone marrow production from birth (congenital)
  • Illnesses affecting the bone marrow such as leukemia
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy

Supportive Treatment
